Closing the Loop

Cycle with toilet and Nutrient Harvester technology leading to dry fertilizer leading to carrots leading back to the toilet

We provide modular sanitation solutions, with a focus on technologies for the recovery of nutrients and water from human excreta and grey water.

Our first product, the Nutrient Harvester, is an on-site treatment technology that transforms urine into a concentrated fertilizer. It can be operated with urinals or urine-separating toilets, and it complements existing sanitation technologies for feces, greywater or mixed wastewater. Unlike the time consuming installationion of conventional  wastewater treatment solutions, we provide a prefabricated, standardised unit that only needs to be connected to a socket.

Technical scheme of the Nutrient Harvester treatment process with the main steps of stabilization and concentration

To fulfill these treatment goals, the urine undergoes a four-stage process:

By stabilising the liquid, pathogens are inactivated and a conversion of urea into ammonia is inhibited. This prevents the loss of the nutrient as well as the production of odours caused by volatile ammonia and organic degradation products.

In an optional step, micro-pollutants such as drug residues can be removed from the urine.

In the last stage, the solution is concentrated by evaporating 95% of the water content to produce a nutrient rich (NPK) fertilizer product.
